The Suit Club at Shellenberger’s is the “Best Men’s Clothing Store” according to The Eagle readers.

Owner David Shellenberger said, “It is an honor to have been selected as the best men’s wear retailer. It is encouraging to know that the hard work that goes into not only offering the finest in men’s apparel, but striving to be the best in terms of customer service is appreciated by the local community. I really appreciate the confidence that our customers have in The Suit Club and it encourages us to work that much harder to make the business better. It is both humbling and gratifying to have been voted the best. It makes striving to be the best both a business philosophy and a blessing.”

Shellenberger started the business 1970 as a student at Baylor, and expanded to the Bryan/College Station market in 1975. The store relocated from the old Townshire Center to its current location in 1980.

“I started working in a men’s clothing store while in high school and the store became available during my junior year in college. I was able to purchase the business from its previous owner who financed the purchase. I was able to pay off the note out of profits over
a five-year period,” he said. “ I then started looking for other opportunities and discover ed that Bryan/College Station did not have a quality men’s store and therefore decided to expand here. It is a move that I have never regretted. In fact, what was planned as a temporary move to get the business started turned into a permanent one as we fell in love
with the community and have lived here since 1975.”

Shellenberger said his approach to making customers feel comfortable in the clothes he sells is making the customer feel comfortable while buying them.

“The Suit Club employees are a family. We have worked together f or upwards of ten years and everyone is concerned with delivering the same level of service. We go out of our way to create a casual atmosphere of friends shopping with friends. There is never an atmosphere of pressure,” he said. “The Suit Club customer feels like part of the family. they are known by name and they know that we know not only what their likes and dislikes are, but what their wardrobe needs are as well. Finally, we keep extensive records of each customer’s purchases so that targeted recommendations can be made in order to expand
one’s wardrobe in a systematic manner. Having this type of atmosphere makes the customers comfortable and makes it fun to come to work each day knowing that work entails interacting with our friends.”

Shellenberger said he knows his friends and customers very well, and puts their needs before his own.

“Customer service means doing whatever it takes to satisfy our clients,” he said. “If necessary, that means working before or after hours to meet the customer’s schedule, having a garment altered while they wait or delivering the garment to the customer’s home, sometimes in areas as far away as Brenham, Navasota or even Houston to meet the
customer’s particular needs, if that is what is necessary.”
